Janicza Bravo's ZOLA comes in at a hugely-deserved second place on our Best of 2021 list! Based on A'Ziah 'Zola' King's viral twitter thread and true story, #TheStory, the film took us on a rollercoaster of witty humour mixed with its gritty narrative of sex trafficking in the US. It is worthy of all it’s rave reviews and, we’re sure, soon to be many award nominations and wins in the new year!

ECHO BEST OF 2021: IT'S A SIN

We have reached our top 3! The third spot on our countdown goes to IT'S A SIN! Russell T. Davies' fantastic five-part series was directed by Peter Hoar and cut by echo Editor Sarah Brewerton, who each won the awards for Best Director and Best Editing respectively at this year's RTS Craft + Design awards.

As it hit our TV screens in January, we were all stunned by the series' beautiful depiction of the vibrancy and fun of 1980's London concurrent with the bleak tragedy of the HIV/AIDS crisis and its toll on the LGBTQ+ community. IT'S A SIN was a no brainer for this year’s countdown!

The sixth spot in our Top 10 TV + Film of 2021 selection goes to Jasmila Zbanic's QUO VADIS, AIDA?

After its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, the powerful film received nominations at both this years Oscars and BAFTAs. QUO VADIS, AIDA? offers a raw depiction of the events of the Bosnian War and was a must for our Best of 2021 list!

MINARI is Number 7 in our Top 10 TV + Film countdown of 2021!

The film received the Grand Jury Prize and U.S. Dramatic Audience Award at Sundance, and the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture (Foreign Language).

The moving drama about family and the experience of immigration was written and directed by Lee Isaac Chung and features the brilliant work of echo's DOP Lachlan Milne ASC, ACS, NZCS.

DRIVE MY CAR, directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi! We aren't alone in our appreciation, the film premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival where it was selected for the Palme d'Or and won three awards including Best Screenplay. The film has also been selected as the Japanese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards.

Nominations for the 2022 Independent Spirit Awards have been released! IT'S A SIN has been nominated for the Best New Scripted Series award. The fantastic five-part series was written by Russell T. A huge congratulations to Aleem Khan's AFTER LOVE which received 6 awards at last night's BIFA Awards - including Best British Independent Film, Best Director and Best Debut Director!

The film featured Hair + Makeup design by echo's Diandra Ferreira, who also worked on last night's Best Short winner FEMME.

Congrats go to all BIFA winners, including Cathy Brady on her Best Debut Screenwriter Award for WILDFIRE, which was edited by echo's Matteo Bini.
